Roofing Materials Tax Credit
Two types of roofing materials are eligible for federal tax credit. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act allows homeowners a roofing material tax credit when they purchase reflective asphalt shingles or Metal as their roofing material. Homeowners that choose to roof their home with materials that meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® requirements receive a 30% tax credit, up to a $1,500 limit. 1. Reflective Asphalt Shingles
Here is how you calculate the tax credit for choosing reflective asphalt shingles as your roofing material:
Say the average Portland Roof is 2500 square feet or in roofer speak 25 square. The cost of 30 year architectural style, reflective asphalt shingles is $66 per square. That’s $66 for every 100 square feet of roof. $66 x 25 square = $1650. $1650 is the total cost of your shingles x 30% = $495 tax credit. Reflective shingles cost $6.00 more per square than non reflective shingles so you would of had to spend 6 x 25 = $150 more to get your $495 tax credit. $495-$150=$295 is your tax credit.
